  1. I have owned a clothing/lingerie shop for over 30 years now. There are 4 'tradeshows' a year, for the 'seasonal' clothing and that is where you will find the sales reps for the different lines. The majority of clothing is sold through 'independant' reps, but a few of the 'major' brand names have the reps working directly for them. Stay AWAY from the 'own your own clothing store' scam franchises...by the time you pay the fees and get the store open-you have lost any profit making possibility. Trust me, I've gone over the paperwork with a few that didn't believe me and wondered why they went bankrupt.

Trade shows on the east coast are in Boston, New York and Atlanta, probably Chicago as well but I don't pay attention to them.

Many of the 'apparel' shows are affiliated with 'permanent showrooms' of the reps, like the Boston showrooms at Bayside for members of NEAC, Atlanta has a permanent building, and there are others across the country. This gives you a chance to see reps and clothing lines at your convenience, not in the madhouse of several thousand others. You WILL have to prove you are a 'business owner' because these shows are not open to the public.

And unfortunately, you might find out that some 'brand name lines' are EXCLUSIVE to the chain and you can't get them anywhere else

  2. look for contacts in New York,  buyers go there in April to view the lines and get pricing but i would look more in specialties  items with a private designer  finding them would help tremendously in a start up company like yours. Also it would be a private label for both of you. CHA CHING!

  3. sweatshops

  4. they buy from the factories. you have to find out where the Trade shows are and go there. that is where you make contacts with the makers.

  5. I'm not sure about others but i'm talking about penneys. They have a large no of supplier units in India. Believe me they buy at very low prices in india and raise them upto 6 times when selling!!!.As a supplier i can tell u most of the stores buy either from india or in china.  If u want to buy for very less price then u have to source them from these places. The government policies and shipping process are also not very difficult. But make sure you are dealing with the right person in order to be sure of the quality.

    best of luck.

  6. From the Mexicans.

  7. yeah good luck with that. Manufacturers set the price of their clothing, not the retailers. And you can't buy in bulk like the big stores do, so you are liable to be laughed out of the place.

  8. They go to trade shows. There are manufacturers in China that will produce clothes with the stores brand. They also meet up with all the major company sales people.

  9. sweatshops in Vietnam and China
