I have a 3 and 4 y/o with autism and I think a dog would do good with them. I heard of those service dogs working well with autistic children and I want one for my children. Looking for any good info. Thank you

  1. Battersea dogs home if you're British.

  2. I'm a special ed major and i think this is a very good idea, go to the humane society just make sure you get records on the dog and if it was abused or well taken care of or not its important you don't get a dog that has problems you need a calm quiet gentle dog just in case your children might not realize and hurt it which could very well happen you don't want the dog to snap, and make sure its all up to date on its shots.

And you can get free training at pet supermarket its imp t to keep your kids safe on the idea and knowledge of having a dog

    Good luck

  3. Here is the Autistic Service Dogs of America website:

    http://www.autismservicedogsofamerica.co...

support groups for autistic dogs for kids http://groups.msn.com/ServiceDogsandAuti...

  4. get them pit bulls

  5. I have a lab.She is great with my kids.Best to get a puppy or from a shelter.Labs and golden Retrievers are great with kids.If you can find one without papers, they are cheaper.Shelter dogs you don`t really know if the dog was abused or not,or raised with kids,so maybe a puppy is a better idea.If you have time to train it.My dog is potty trained. Will sit and stay, and play fetch, and shake. Most of the time, she is my sons only playmate.

  6. Not sure where you live, but you might try Guide Dogs of The Desert as well for a service dog. It is very important that the dog is well trained with a calm personality. This is a non-profit organization with no cost for families.

  7. Trained service dogs are extremely expensive but can be of great use.   The normal costs can be between $12,000-$25,000 depending on where you get the dog from.

Most help you with ideas for fund-raising but you are pretty much on your own to raise the money.   I looked into it for my son.  Needless to say, he didn't get a trained dog.

However, a dog has been wonderful for him.  We got a regular Sheltie and my son loves him to death.   Getting Dusty was one of the smarter things we managed to do.

    Good luck!

  8. I would look into the SPCA since there are lots of dogs there that people don't want and its sad what happens to them.  Or you could probably go to a pet store. Or even search where they sell trained dogs like for blind people and people who have seizures. I know some health insurance helps with that. Maybe look into getting them to help pay for it since you have autistic children.
