Question:

Where do I get free or cheap moving boxes

We need enough boxes to pack a 2 bedroom place, we have a lot of stuff (mostly toys, lol) I used fruit boxes before from Costco, but our stuff ended up smelling like old fruit so I prefer not to use those kinds of boxes again. They sell 5 boxes for $15 at Wal-Mart which will add up to way too much money in the end. We probably need close to 40 boxes. Any ideas on where to go?

  1. You can get free boxes at any supermarket, just hang out for a few minutes by the meat/produce section employee door and ask a worker if they have any egg boxes lying around, (cardboard boxes egg containers come in).  They're the perfect size for moving and have handles and are free!  Workers are usually happy to get rid of them so they don't have to spend the time breaking them up.  You can go back every couple days, or hit up a few stores, but they'll usually give you a bunch at once.

  2. I just gave mine away on the yahoo group Freecycle, and Craig's list has a bunch of listings for free boxes.  They arer out there!  go for it.  Do you have friends who wsork in biotech?  Cardboard holds alot of mold, and they go through a ton of plasticware.  Biotech friends can get tons of used boxes for free - and the boxes are sturdy!

  3. Go to the mall. Most stores get shipments at least two times a week and they'd probably be happy to let you take them off their hands. The only problem is: If you only go to one store to get the boxes, it will probably take a couple weeks to get 40, so you might wanna go to several stores.

Just call them, talk to the manager, and ask.

    :)

  4. I work in an office.  So I collected the paper boxes or misc boxes that people would throw away.  So if you work  in an office or know someone, this is a cheap waay to go.

  5. I used to go to a large chain supermarket and was told by the night manager that the best boxes (cleanest and strong) are they boxes that they ship cereal in.  Call in the evening and they should be able to put some aside for you each night for pickup in the morning ALL FOR FREE!

  6. Offices often have paper boxes (the size that would hold about 10 or 12 reams of paper).  These are an excellent size for carrying, they have lids, and they are designed for a fairly considerably weight.  Sizable offices just have to dispose of the boxes, so they are often very cooperative about giving them away for a good use.

  7. what about....

  8. Package stores. Banana boxes at the supermarket are great, strong and have seperate covers, plus they have hole vents so no smells.
