It silly but ever since I was young I found myself wanting to get into Archeology. But my family has no money and at this time I'm having money issues. I, however, don't wanna give up on my dream. I read books and actually feel jealous about these discoveries and wish I really could have been there but of course I wasn't born so, anyways, if anybody has an idea where to start on achieving my Archeology dream please help me.

  1. Why not just go for your PHD right here, at the University of Yahoo! Answers?

  2. First, you need to ask yourself what kind of archaeology you would like to study. i.e. Old World, New World, coastal, plains, maybe you'd like to study animals in relation to humans and be a zooarchaeologist. Do you want to be an egyptologist? Old World archaeology differs from New World in that it has more of an historical basis - not as much about strata because they can refer to the written record. You'll find archaeology with history in Europe while most archaeology programs are with the anthropology department in the United States. Once you figure out what you want to do, research online to find out which school is the best for studying your interest. Don't be afraid to email professors and ask them questions you may have about their programs - Professors love to get asked about their research so don't be afraid to ask! Once you get some training in basic fieldwork methods you should be able to get some jobs as a "shovel bum" on a site under a trained archaeologist's direction and supervision. The more experience you have the easier it may be to get into graduate school. Get your masters degree and you should be able to head up some of your own excavations. Cultural Resource Management is a hot area to get into so you may have some good job prospects ahead of you! Good luck!

  3. I think you should go after financial success.  It sounds like you could really use a break from financial struggle.  The best way to make big bucks without a degree is sales.

Archeology is great- but you'll rack up $80,000 in debt just to be allowed to make a discovery - in 45 years - after your reputation is solid - after years of research - after you have skin cancer on your neck from field work - I could go on and on.

It really is not a s**y career, and you could spend your whole life digging and never find anything that is noteworthy.  Go make some money :)  Buy a house and have a drink - I promise you'll be happier.

Sorry, I didn't really answer your question.  Try the University of Utah - cheap and a totally respectable program.
