  1. There are many sites. Some have family trees(be cautious).  Some have mailing lists and message boards and some have records.

Ancestry.Com has all of those.  It isn't free but if you find it too pricey, your public library might have a subscription to it.  They have all the U.S. censuses through 1930.  The 1940 and later are not available to the public yet. They have U.K. censuses through 1901. They have military and immigration records and indexes to vital records of many states.

Just don't take as absolute fact everything you see in family trees on ANY website, free or not free.  The trees are subscriber submitted(by folks like you and me) and most are not documented or they are poorly documented.  You might see different information on the same people from different subscribers.  Then you will see the same info from different subscribers on the same people, but that is no guarantee at all it is correct.   It is obvious, a lot of people copy without verifying.  The information is only useful as CLUES as to where to get the documentation.   Also, don't expect to find living people in the trees as that is considered an invasion of privacy and can lead to identity theft.

Another free source is a Family History Center at a Latter Day Saints(Mormon) Church. They have records on people all over the world, not just Mormons.  In Salt Lake City, they have the world's largest genealogical collection. Their Family History Centers can order microfilm for you to view at a nominal fee.

I have never had them to try and convert me or send their missionaries by to ring my doorbell.  I haven't heard of them doing that to anyone else that has used their resources. Just call the nearest Mormon Church or visit their free website,FamilySearch.org,  to find out their hours for the general public.

But first, if you haven't, try and get as much information from living family as possible, particuarly your senior members.  Find out if any has any old family bibles.  Ask to see and make copies of birth, marriage and death certificates.

Depending on the faith, baptismal, first communinon, comfirmation and marriage records can be helpful.

It is a good idea to tape people, particularly seniors if they will let you.  It probably will turn out they are confused on some things, but what might seem to be insignificant story telling might eventually turn out to be very significant.

Cyndi'sList.Com is a website with links to many other websites that can ge helpful with genealogy.

  2. Depending on whether someone has researched your family tree will determine whether you will be able to find it on the internet.  I've researched lines in which no one has worked on it before so there was nothing out there on them, but once I posted the information others were able to connect their family into the line and they incorporated my data into theirs.

Some site to look at are:

    www.familiysearch.org

    www.gencircles.com

    www.rootsweb.com

    www.usgenweb.com

    www.ancestry.com
