  1. In 1812 Charles Dickens, a well-known author, was born.

The better way would be:  The author Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812 in Portsmouth, England.

The second sentence you gave is correct.  The reason I left out "famous and well-known" is because it's redundant (repetitive).    If you want to say "The well-known author..." or "The famous author..." that's okay.  Just don't use both.
