I have one tower fan, one floor fan, no air conditioner and a two story home. I want to cool down the house using fans and natural air circulation/filtration but do not know where to place my portable fans to be most effective. Do I place them facing windows in the rooms I want cooled down to force hot air out? Or do I place them pulling air in? I do not want to move the fans in different places every day/night so when do I open and shut windows and turn on and off the fans? Any advice would be helpful!

  1. place them so one pulls fresh air in and the other pushes hot air out. keep in mind small fans will not do the trick for more than one room they just don't have the capasity. you may want to look into a swamp cooler they are inexpensive to run and do a fair job of cooling.

  2. In our area, the majority of wind came from North and West; therefore, these windows would be either just open or have fans blowing inward.  Fans in windows on East and/or South would be blowing outward.

There would be a table or standing fan set up at an angle to bring cooler air around 'corners'.

  3. when we lived in a two story, we found the most effective and quickest way to cool down the house was with a whole house fan.  It's installed in the ceiling of a second story open area. It has louvers that open when turned on and close when the fan is off.

We opened a few windows when the air was cooler outside and turned on the fan.  Within 5 minutes the inside of the house was the same temperature as the outside.  That fan was wonderful!

If I still lived in a two story house, I would have to have another one of those fans.
