  1. Its better to have it higher up the wall, helps with circulation, won't be obstructed by tables chairs, wall units

  2. The "head' or evaporator of a split type air conditioner unit can come in several different configurations.  Some are meant to be attached to a ceiling and some to stand in a corner or even on the floor.  The most common type is intended to be mounted high on a wall.  (approx 2" from the ceiling in the US or about 5cm elsewhere.)  You can't push it against the ceiling as the vents sucking air into the unit are generally located on the top and upper portion of the front of the unit.  (Contrasted with a "window unit" that typically has incoming air on the lower half of the unit and blows out the top, on split type units the wall mounted evaporators blow out of the bottom of the unit.)  Additionally the front cover typically hinges up to come off and needs the additional clearance to the ceiling.

If a wall mounted evaporator is placed lower on the wall there is more a risk of layering of hotter air above the unit's height.  One example where this might be necessary is in an attic where the unit will be mounted on a gable end but there is no room above a window high up in the center of the room.  To offset the disadvantage of mounting the unit lower you might consider the use of a fan, either ceiling or wall mounted to help keep the air mixed up.

If you have any possible choice mount a wall unit high up on the wall.  This is the way it is designed to work and will therefore do its job most effectively.
