So I look at the produce departments of several supermarkets and I'm blown away by the sheer quantity that I see. Surely all of it isn't sold, so my question is, what happens to all that food? Does it get composted? Feel free to edumacate me on farm subsidies and other related issues. I have an open mind and I like to hear interpretations of the truth from different people from across the political spectrum. I'm a city dweller with a high school education

  7. It is all wasted and thrown away to rot in the garbage most retailers would rather destroy perfectly usuable products rather then not make a profit on them by giving them away to the needy

this includes everything from electronic items to books to food.

  8. It's discounted. Then if it still doesn't sell, it's often donated

  11. I work in a large chain grocery store and most of the fruit & veggies get sold. When it gets old but still edible,it gets discounted for dirt cheap. When it gets rotted,it is thrown out.

  12. Actually, a vast majority of the fruits and veggies in supermarkets are sold... It may seem like a large amount, but take into consideration the sheer number of people who go into these places, the fact that you can keep these on the shelf for at the least, a few days, and that they're constantly replenishing with new fruits and veggies.

Rotten ones that do not sell are almost always introduced to the dumpster behind the market. , composting would be a very good solution, but the stores generally do not have the time or willingness to do so.

  13. I used to work at a family owned supermarket, and they donated everything to the local homeless shelter before it went bad.  Chain stores  usually throw theirs out.

  17. currently, most of them are either thrown away or donated to charity if they are still edible. however, i've read a newspaper saying that in the future, unwanted food are sent to be decomposed by bacteria. the waste (methane) created by bacteria can be used to generate electricity. hope it helps
