  6. Wasps die, that's why they go kamikaze in the Autumn. They are collecting everything they can food wise to create a larder.

    The queen lays next years wasps in jelly and next years queens in royal jelly.

    The wasps hatch first and live off the larder, when they reach adulthood they hatch the queens. The first queen out is the new nest queen, the others take an army of male drones each and set off to build  new nests.

    Bees are similar, but their larder is honey.

  7. Hibernate. Sometimes you find them- last year I found a hornet under a plastic sheet which I used to cover the outside guinea pig hutch with. I know they're rare so I put it in a hollow bamboo tube and plugged it up with hay, and earlier this year it flew away.
