  1. I would say white people who were there slave owners

  2. I got mine from my dad

  3. Their parents.

  4. Most took the surname of the plantation/slave owner in whichever country they were enslaved.

  5. well the ones that were enslaved got theirs from the prick masters!

  6. Well becuase most slave owners gave thier last names to their slaves that is where we get out last names.....unless they changed them if they were freed or something. It depends on the family.

  7. Adam and Eve like everyone else.

  8. You mean where it originates from? It depends on what Black people you are talking about.

The majority of those in the African-American community and the Caribbeans had their surnames derived from slave owners in the past. Africans tend to have their surnames on the basis of religious aspects (e.g. "God help me") and usually has loose roots in religious books such as the Koran or the Bible which was then converted into their respective tribal language, opposed to Western Europeans who had their surnames on the basis of what that person was known as (e.g. Brown-haired person way back would have been called "Brown" or "Browne"). Southern Africans are slightly different however, in the fact that their surnames were from tribal languages a long time ago.

  9. Research Malcolm X's story. He chose the last name X because he didn't identify with his birth surname.

  10. My great great great grandfather's slave master. =)

When slaves were freed, they were allowed to pick their own last name. Most of them kept their master's last name whil alot of them changed it. The last name Lincoln was popular because obviously, he freed the Southern slaves.

  11. The same reason African American speak english. From The slave maters! If you havent noticed most black americans have european last names and are not europeans. Think about it

  12. it depends were you are from in the states i guess people who owned slaves they were given there "masters" name. In te caribbean or Africa where people have deep roots the may have tribal names. It really depends where people are from many slaves changed there surnames once they were freed eg: Malcolm X changed his surname from little to X because he new it was a western name & it would have been given to his family through slavery.

  13. A lot of times it comes from their former slave owners name...when the Civil War ended black families were ripped apart, and in order to find their family members easier they would adopt their slave owners last names...as a means of identifying each other...

    toodles
