I've always wondered where do the consuls live in countries abroad... do they live inside the embassy/consulate compound or do they have private residences?

  1. Usually private residences.

  2. Depends. Some consulates are nothing more than an office. Some are complete buildings and compounds. It depends on the wealth and size of the country running the consulate and the size and importance of the country in which the consulate is. For the United States, most embassies are buildings with lodging. Most consulates are not. Here is a list.
