Where do fruit flies come from?

They just seem to come from no where.. You have a piece of aging fruit and bam you have a whole colony of flies taking over your kitchen counter.. How do they just appear from no where?

This reminds me of the theory where people use to believe that rats appear spontanously in places with food. There's no real trick other then that a fruit fly flew by and laid eggs or the eggs were already there when you had the fruit.
