  1. You will need to get your CDA-Child Development Associate, with this diploma besides the knowledge of the course itself, you will earn more money.  This course is about 5 months long with classes every saturday from 8:30 till 2:30. I am glad I did and I used to look forward for Saturdays to go to class, besides being fun, you'll meet a lot of nice people...oh, by the way, the cost is around $600.00, I hope you'll do it...:-))

  2. It depends what level you want to get into.  If you want to own and operate the business, you need to have a degree in early childhood education.  if you want into lower levels of the business, you may just want to get a certificate the first person was talking about.  at the very basic level, for a little above minimun wage, you don't need anything except to like children.  hope it all works out!

  3. Go or call social service in the area where you live or planing to open a center or family day care, they will tell you what steps to take to get started

  4. Each State can require certain types of certificates, and a CDA is required by most.

You can earn it through Adult Education (takes a little longer but worth it), regular Colleg classes and sometimes through On-The-Job training (some employers will do it this way).

A CDA will earn you the right to be called 'Teacher' and will in most cases put you ahead of other applicants who don't hold a certificate. It does NOT mean you will make more money, but you will earn more than if you are a 'Teacher's Aide', and will not mean that you qualify automatically for Beneifts (that is up to your boss).

If you want to Own/Operate your own Child Care (not day care because you take CARE of children NOT Days) it would be a good idea to also get your Ownership/Management certification since it will be required to hold one (even IF you employ a CDA Teacher). Also you will need to get your 40hrs class with a 8hr class update every 6 months (I could be wrong on the time frame as this is what it was when I taught).

Be sure to also get First Aid and CPR and keep them current (this can be done thru your local Fire Department or Red Cross).

    Good luck

  5. Contact your local college to see if they offer a program in early childhood education. Each state, province, country, etc. has their own entrance requirements. Here in Ontario, Canada, we take a 2 year diploma program with a concentration on child development. Some centers will hire a non-qualified person as an assistant, but most prefer someone with a diploma. It is becoming mandatory for ECE teachers to hold a college diploma.
