it is on right side uper side

on the left hand side there is the options list with messages ect, you'll find promote as an option click on it and you'll find the formula for it just cut and passte to where you want the button

how did the friend invite you?

I just sent an invite- I see the 'join this group' right in it- on the bottom right of the e-mail and it's gray in color

maybe your mail settings is disabling links

It is on the right hand side (both upper and lower parts) of the homepage.

If the owner has sent you an invitation, there should be "join this group" button within the invitation.
