go to www.genealogy.com.

has alot of info on there about surnames and people reseaching their families too.

good site and also www.rootsweb.com

you do have to register...but not pay.

The only genealogy site that I know of that is completely free to use is the Mormons site www.familysearch.org it's absolutely amazing.

If you go up to the "search for questions" box and type in Genealogy Free you will get 204 messages that have previously addressed your question.

Before asking questions in all sections, I wish everyone would check to see if someone (or in this case many someones) had already asked the same question.  Way to many folks don't bother looking prior to posting.
