I am finishing my basement and am confused on where i should put my vapor barrier, on the inside of the walls or outside or both? The basement walls are pored concrete. I'm using wood studs and moisture resistant wallboard. i will also be installing insulation. but should i put the vapor barrier behind the wall closest to the concrete or does it go right behind the wallboard? thanks

  1. Vapor barrier ALWAYS goes to the warm side.  If you are insulating the stud cavities, staple a 6 mil poly barrier onto the studs after insulating.  Otherwise you will allow condensation to build up inside the wall and cause mold/rot issues.

  2. Right up against the cement is the way to go.  In fact, rather than frame and insulate between the studs, think about using 2" rigid foam right up against the cement walls.  Seal the joints and insulate the band joist.  Before insulating the band joist, get some spray foam and seal up any penetrations (wires for outside outlets, silcocks, etc).  Use PT 2x4 sill plate as stated but under that you could also put a sill seal.

Here is a good website for reference:

Also as stated, the moisture resistant wallboard isn't necessary if you follow the steps given by the answerer above.

  3.   Behind as stated above.. Plus I d use ( and it s code in some places)a pressure treated 2x4 sill plate.. You can save a little and not use a water resistant drywall just leave it off the floor 1/2 to 3/4 inch as well as you wood base board approx 3/8 inch and that varies w/ what flooring you have  GL

  4. It should go right up against the concrete, as you don't want moisture getting to your studs or insulation.  You should also put it on the ceiling of the basement (rather, underneath the floor of the room over the basement, then insulate this as well if you plan to put in a ceiling in the basement.
