  1. It depends entirely on your setup: your equipment and your room. We can't tell you from here.

The general technique is to play pink noise through your system and, using a sound pressure level meter, adjust the sliders until all levels are equal as measured from the listening position.

If you really want "best sound," though, it may be best to remove this item from your audio chain. Low quality graphic equalizers like this are notorious for introducing phase distortion and may make your system sound worse overall, regardless of the slider settings.

  2. Start with all of the controls in the middle of the range, so that they form two straight lines. This is a flat response, because there is no boost or attenuation for any of the frequencies the sliders control.

Now, listen to the system for a while. Does there seem to be something missing in any part of the audible spectrum? For example, is the midrange too present? Do the low frequencies tend to drop off at some point? Are the high frequencies loud enough?

Now, play with the controls. Just nudge them about a half a tick and then listen again to how the sound is now. And, make sure to go back to the same place you listened to the sound originally (the same chair or whatever). Where you are in the room can change the accoustics because of sound reflections and absorptions by furniture or whatever.

Keep doing this until you think you have the perfect equalization for your room. Note where the controls are (what pattern the sliders form), so you can replicate that if you or someone else changes them later. When I used a graphic equalizer back in the day, I found that I always used the same general pattern: The lowest frequencies kind of tailed up on the end, then the pattern kind of flattened out in the middle, the second or third sliders from the right came up, and the highest frequency control was back down a bit.

It takes a while to finally get the equalization you like best. One day you'll like it and the next you'll be changing it again. But, keep playing with it. You'll find the optimum settings eventually.
