  1. Most jockeys are born into it.  Grandpa was a jockey, dad was jockey, etc.  and so they were raised around the race track for that reason they decide to become jockeys.  There are however some jockeys who decide to become jockeys who weren't born into it.

  2. Well, at some point they make a decision that being a jockey is something they would like to do. Otherwise, they would go into another career. It helps to be light and not weigh much over a 100 pounds. It also helps a lot to live near a track or training center where there opportunities to meet trainers, other jockeys, and learn to work with race horses.

  3. well,1st of all they all have a degree of derring-do ,its a bit like being a fighter pilot in the war, with no parachute.then they have to learn to be supurb riders, balance,a brain and a serious will to win.if they have that then they have to be of a physicall stature to enable them to ride at the weights laid down by the j.club.then,if they have all that they have to be lucky, and thats the real big bit, they have to be in the right place at the right time to meet the trainers,owners..in other words P.R. is very important.Basically an average jockey will win his fair share of races, but a brilliant jockey will win that quota AND pinch some he had no right to win. However, they are overestimated in their importance and in % terms probibaly are worth no more than 5% to the outcome of a race.I am simplifing this a bit but a lot of the winners ridden could be ridden by trained monkeys just the same, its just more fun to have humans doing it!!

  4. I believe they come from their mothers womb. I figure at about the time they figure they're not going to be too tall, a sixth sense just brings them to a stable. Many jockeys happen to be a family line also.

  5. An awful lot of them are from racing families.  The Baze family, for example, has members riding or training in at least 3 different circuits.  David Cohen, Kyle Kannel, Chad Schwanevelt are among the many jockeys whose father either rode or is a trainer.
