  1. After yesterday, I would say the base of the bridge just before you get out of town....  oh, you said get on the ship....

  2. In Most Ports the Pilots Usually meet the Ships just Outside of the Sea Buoy, For inbound ships.  For Outbound Ships They Embark on the ship at the Pier and Disembark at the Sea Buoy,  In some cases if the ship is in Anchorage, they will Sometimes Board the Vessel there.

  3. Never been in San Francisco harbor, but have been in a lot of others around the world. Vessels are usually met a mile or two outside the harbor entrance by a pilot boat and the pilot boards at that time. Military vessels are sometimes met as well, but not always.

  4. around the sea buoy, just a few miles out from the bridge.

  5. The Bar Pilots for San Francisco Bay meet incoming ships about 10 miles offshore at the SF Sea Buoy.  For outgoing ships, they board the ship before it leaves the dock and they disembark at the Sea Buoy.
