Question:

Where do people who live in manhattan get groceries?

I am really curious. I noticed that there aren't really any Path Marks or Waldbaums, or any sort of huge food markets around where the expensive apartments are.

Do people just go out most of the time, and get a few snacks from the tiny gourmet shops around or what?

Or do the maids go and stock up?

I'm sure it differs with every family, but I was curious.

  1. Trader Joe's!

Super cheap, really good, quick service even with incredibly long lines, great people..

  2. Chelsea Market

  3. Sure, all of us have our groceries delivered on pillows by knights in armor who ride unicorns.  They deliver them to our maids, who make sure that the kitchen staff knows each day's planned menus.

The expensive apartments don't have grocery stores on the lower levels - that's why they're expensive apartments.  Go a few blocks away, however, and you'll probably find a block of housing with a D'Agostino's or a Whole Foods on the ground floor.

I'm sure some people eat out almost every night, if they can afford it, and I'm sure some people get by eating at chichi little specialty delis like Balducci's or Dean & Deluca - but most regular people in Manhattan go to grocery stores just like in other cities.

  4. where in manhattan r u refering to???? theres a key a few blocks away. and we have the essex market, and now theres a wholefoods, and a lot of little mom and pop stores that have mostly anything...

  5. Chelsea Market is the best, but if you look there are lots of markets in Manhattan.

  6. err. The grocery stores like anywhere else.  Also the farmers markets, whole foods and quality specialty food stores, like butchers and green grocers etc.    Also Balducis and Chelsea market as mentioned above.
