  1. there are several types of poppies

  2. poppyseeds come from the poppy flower.  There are several types and it is the processing that turns them into opium, the drug.  The seeds themselves are removed, dried and used in cakes or as decoration or toasted in salads.

  8. The spice website at the source below sells them and gives the following information.

Blue Poppy (Papaver sommniferum) seeds are most often seen sprinkled on breads and bagels. The variety of poppy seeds used for cooking are `inert' containing none of the alkaloids that comprise the narcotic opium. They have a mild flavour and sweetish aroma both of which are enhanced by baking, and dry roasted seeds have a delicious crunchy texture sprinkled over salads and into coleslaw. Fried seeds can be added to noodles or pasta.

When you think about it would the government really allow bakers to sell poppy seeded rolls to the general public if they contained any narcotic?!!!

I love them - and any seeds added to bread help to make it healthier.
