  1. Was the person who sent you this e-mail also a member of the Yahoo Group that you're a member of?  If so, any member of a Yahoo Group can e-mail any other member of the same Yahoo Group, and whether or not you can stop it depends on the Group's settings (set by the owner).

The only way you could stop this is if the Group allows members to hide their e-mail address.  To check this, sign in to your Group's home page on the web.  Then click the Edit Membership link near the middle of the top line (just below the ad if there is one).  Then, towards the bottom of Step 1 Your Contact Information, look for a sub-section called Email Address Display.  If this sub-section is there, it will have a check-box in it labelled Hide My Email And IP Address From The Group Moderators; you would check this check-box.  If you change any settings on this page, don't forget to click the Save Changes button (towards the lower-right-hand corner) when you're done.

  2. unless you know it's a member of a group, there's not way to know where it came from. even if the members list was closed, group members getting posts into their e-mail will still get your address. hiding your e-mail address could be an option only if it is, you can the only post off the group and not from your own e-mail.

any time you use on line services, belong to groups, you expose yourself to certain things and e-mails.

ignore unwanted private e-mails, tell the owner about it.
