Where do the Amish store food products that are supposed to be kept in the frigerator?

  1. They either pickle it, salt it or like most of the previous posters stated, they could use an ice box.  I saw a programme on TV the other day about how in Australia, they would have a biweekly ice delivery.  The Iceman would come with a huge block of ice and that would last about 3-4 days.

  3. Well, some Amish do use refridgerators.  Meat can be dryed, or canned, just like many fresh fruits and vegetables.

    Nothing is "supposed to be kept in the frigerator"  Just because you do something, doesn't mean everyone is "supposed to" do it.  Open your mind a bit and see the possiblities.

  4. Take a large bowl and place a stone or brick in it. Pour cold water into the bowl, but do not cover the brick. Place the food which you want to keep cool on the brick and cover with an unglazed terracotta plant pot. The plant pot absorbs the water and evaporation will keep the food cool. Make sure there is always water in the bowl. You can then keep the food cool, but I wouldn't recommend doing this for more than 48 hours.

    When I was living in a house without electricity my mother had specially designed terracotta milk bottle covers for this purpose.

  5. They use propane or kerosene refrigerators, maybe even "ice boxes". An ice box is like a large walk in freezer with huge blocks of ice or dry ice for keeping things cold.   7. I think they put it an ice box.  An ice box is not a fridge.  It's not plugged into anything to keep it cold.  It's just a wooden box with ice in it.  You put stuff on the ice then close the box to keep it cold.

  9. im sure the amish culture shares, that or they use old methods such as salting.

    but im pretty sure if a family has too much meat that they know they cant preserve, its off to the next door neighbors.
