Question:

Where do the balloons go

If a balloon with helium accidentally flies away, where does it go?

If I were to let it go in Asia, will it get to Antarctica?

I have no idea which category to put this to.

  1. it pops from the pressure and drops to the ground depending on the winds it could go semi-really far

  2. As the balloon rises, it may pop, but if it doesn't, the helium will leak out of the balloon and it will return back to earth. Releasing balloons can be an issue because animals could swallow the deflated balloons and be harmed by that.

  3. It goes to balloon heaven

  4. the balloon will explode

  5. Yes, ultimately it drops.  It does not burn up or vaporize.  Why don't you see it drop?  because the earth is way to big and balloons are way too small for you to find them.  I would guess they don't usually go from country to country very often, they probably go at max few hundred miles and then come back down--depending on the wind.  They'd have to get up into the jet stream to go very far, but that is high enough elevation that most balloons would pop.

Think about it this way--imagine if everybody in the US let a balloon off every day (that's way more than really happens).   You'd have some 300 million balloons falling per day.  But the US is like 2 billion acres, so you'd have like one balloon every 7 acres or so.  Try and find a lone balloon in a 7 acre field and it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack.  The probability of you seeing a falling balloon is extremely slim just due to the size of the earth and the density of people letting go of balloons.

  6. It explodes once it gets to another layer of the atmosphere because the pressure is WAY to much to handle for a simple balloon

  7. I got your point!

If a balloon with helium accidentally flies away it'll go to outer space....actually, not outer space, just on Earth's moon's orbit....so the baloon with helium will just turn-and-turn around.

  8. I think it either burns up or falls onto someone's property.
