  1. migrate to northrend

  2. acorns fall in the fall. rofl.

  3. If it's hot, they go where they can get shade and water. Swamps are good places to find deer, or hard woods with mature trees.  They will migrate to fields in the evening to eat, but return to moist swampy areas in the heat of the day.

  4. First off, most whitetail deer (like you have in Maine) do not migrate.  Whitetail deer typcially are born, live and die within a 3 mile radius.

The reason you are not seeing deer in the summer is because they can find plenty of food sources in the deeper woods.  They can eat the leaves off of the trees and other nuts and berries they find natrually in the woods.  When the leaves fall and the frost comes, it becomes harder to find food sources in the woods, so they start to visit people's yards, where they can find food sources closer to the ground.

Also, when the rut starts, they tend to cross the roads more often as the does are being chased by the bucks.

  5. deer and other big game have a migratory area that encompasses miles, they usually hang out at the highest peaks they can find until the cold weather, snow, and lack of food drives them back down to the lower areas. they also tend to bed down during the day and seek out their food around dusk and dawn

  6. Where I live they are around everywhere year around!*

  7. Typically deer wander around by themselves during the summer feeding on fallen acorn among other things. They are only somewhat predictable during hunting season due the presence of "the rut" or basically the time when the does are fertile and are ready to be bred. They secrete a liquid out of the back of their hind legs called estrous. The scent of estrous is enough for a hot buck to come running from miles away to mate with the doe. This urge to them is an instinct and therefore they follow the does around to breed as many as they can. Buck typically are only found on obvious deer trails during the rut because they are chasing the does who are the ones who actually use the trails. Granted if a buck feel in danger he will know all the escape routes and try to use them to get out of the area as quickly as possible. For the winter deer typically stay in herds and in the spring is when the does drop their fawns. Yes the deer will be back next hunting season but the basic rule of thumb is that once you find the doe the buck will surely follow. This idea has allowed me to bag a great deal of good size deer, due to my knowledge of every deer trail in the area and where the does typically go when they are ready to be bred, which for the area that I hunt is almost always on top of a hill just inside an area of thick brush. Almost impossible to get an arrow through or see enough to get a shot off with the rifle, but if you know the trail you can catch them as they are coming in. Good Luck!

P.S. I hunt upstate NY so the cold temps during the heavy weeks of the rut is all too familiar to me.

  8. Hiding. You don't expect them to come up to you like a domestic dog and ask to be patted, do you?

Deer, bears, raccoons, hares, porcupines -- these animals are most active at sunset through sunrise for a few reasons, a couple of which are:

    (1) Fewer people to deal with when foraging for food

    (2) A more comfortable temperature

Even when sleeping during the day, these animals are pretty sensitive to their surroundings and will simply get up and move before you see them. If you look long enough in a field next to the woods, you'll find deer "beds" -- areas where the grass is bent flat to the ground.
