  1. Here are 2 suggestions. I spend alot of time in the Cancun area and these are some of my favorites. Directly in front of the bus station is Dona Tota's. They serve gorditas, which is a thick corn tortilla stuffed with meat, beans, chili or cheese. The food is great and cheap. Another place also across from the street is Sanborns. It's kinda like a diner. They have a great weekend brunch. There you can try several typical Yucatecan dishes and juices.

I highly recommend those 2 places. I also recommend asking the locals working at your hotel or asking you cab driver. The food there is not the typical Mexican food, but more of the dishes you will find in Yucatan. Have and open mind and explore. Use common sense when choosing a restaurant.

I also eat at Walmart and Chedraui (Mexican version of walmart) at their deli. Its safe, cheap and I can try a little bit of everything. Plus both of those places give out tons of samples. I experiment a lot and only got sick once in the last 10 years, and that was because I caught the flu!

  2. Not in the hotel zone.  There are plenty of restaurants in the old town section of the city.

Try Los Huaraches on Av. Alcatraces, one block west from Hotel Antillano on Tulum. Closed Monday. $3 to $4 for a generous meal.

  3. A word of caution Mexican food is not the same as ours

  4. At home, usually.

  5. Good choice. In my experience, restaurants that cater to tourists are much less careful in their food preparation. They don't care if you come back, but a restaurant catering to local trade relies on repeat business.

Get copies of the Moon Guide or Lonely Planet Guide for the area. They will include a variety of restaurant suggestions.
