Shequoya, Tekia, Laquanda, LaKeisha, Quasima, Tonisha, Lovita,ToKandra, Lashawnda, Moniqua....all these names just scare me!..where do they come up with these names.

I am not trying to judge them, I just really want to know where they get these names from...do they have meaning and do you think the name makes the person?

My name is Nicole Anurika (will not show last name)...Anurika is a Nigerian name which means god is highest, so I know my name has some meaning....

  1. Sometimes they are a melding of several peoples names to pay honor to their ancestors or loved ones. My friends name is LaShawnda, her Fathers name is Lawrence.....La, her Aunts name is Shawna...Shawn, and her Grandmothers Maiden name is DaMar.....da

    L

  2. Names do have meaning, but most of those names really are made up in a sense, as in a way of trying to keep a sense of their african heritage.  Some of those name do have meaning as well.  Some name sounds Indian whether they know or not.  Shequoya is an indian name, and sure they don't know that.  Not trying to sound racial or any sort.  I am american, but every single american born ppl nowadays, actually r made up of all sorts of cultures, races, whatever.  7 on my mothers side, my father, 2 so far that I know of.  So, I'm like a mutt in a way.  My name is Anthony Ray Perkins.   Anthony is really was a n Etruscan name, taken on by the greeks after they have wiped em out basically.  But, the greeks took it as a misconcepted, or misunderstood meaning of it, they knew that they did tho, but still took it on into their list of names, like Marcus Antonius, who killed Caesar.  But, they took on the misunderstood meaning of anthos (flower).  Ray meaning advice, or protector.  Perkins meaning rock/stone/earth.

  3. My friend's daughter came up with the name Jabree for her son because she said she liked how it sounds.  She is also a raging anti-white racist who said she will never give her kids "white" names.  Amazing that such a hate-filled young woman came from such an open-minded and loving woman (my friend).

Anyway, according to the daughter, they just name kids what they think sounds 'good' or 'cool' to them; as long as it sounds nothing like a traditional 'white' name.

  4. African culture.

    Hello!

I have a friend in Nigeria.  Dvonne.

  5. These names are all allegedly West African names. Although I have traveled and lived in Africa for a few years, I never encountered some of these names before. It is actually rather strange.

I think there is a dire need for African Americans to name their children according to their ancestors. However I think the names have become commercial and not really the pure African names as it was supposed to.

The only proper African name that I have encountered in an American is that of the actress Thandi Newton. Thandi is a South African name.

  6. I think at least some of these names are just made up out of thin air.

  7. Hi, All blacks don't have those names my name is Cynthia.

  8. lmao!!!!!

  9. I don't know but they are almost impossible to pronounce let alone spell!
