i guess you could say we have these pretty old school vents for heat, and every spring/summer we get these earwigs come in and out of them and recently moths also... where are they coming from?! how could they possibally survive in there i mean what do they eat? wouldnt the heat kill them in the winter?.. but most importantly are they harmful in any way and is their any way to get rid of them besides an exterminator?

thanks so much..

sincerely , afraid of bugs!

Well, you see, a mama bug and a papa bug get together and. . .

    sorry--couldn't resist! :)

    Serious answer--

The bugs are not ones that survived all winder --this is the next generation--hatched from eggs laid in the fall.  But you are right--they wre not in the vents, or the heat would have kill led them.

The bugs are laying the eggs at some point that remains cool through the winter (the eggs just lie dormant--many species of insect do this).  Most will be harmless--but not necessarily all.

If you can't find the source (and the odds aren't good--its not easy) you will need an exterminator.  But here's two things yu can check:

    >Is there a part of the vent system--or a break in it--where there is a location the heated air does NOT go in winter (e.g. a vent in the attic which has a loose connection between sections.

    > If the bugs show up right after you first turn the AC on, the bugs could be laying their eggs there.

    Good luck!
