  1. AJ, Thoroughbred names are usually a combination of both the names of the horse's parent's, and sometimes, a grandparent or two. Horses have also been named for people, or for other animals, the way Barbaro was. ( Barbaro was named for a foxhound which was pictured in a painting owned by his owners, the Jacksons. ) I have even heard of racehorses being named for events, and for verses in the Bible. Horses are named for literature as well- one of the more famous winners of the later 20th century was named Round Table, after the famous table in the tales of King Arthur.

One of the other writers is correct- the names of famous horses cannot be used again once the horse either retires or dies. This is to prevent confusion in the sport about horses' identities. The Jockey Club also prohibits horses from being given names that are offensive or inappropriate in some way, or which are sexually explicit, and they also have a limit on how many letters a name can have.

  2. It usually depends on their parents names. For example: Mom: Cal Star Dad: Wind Speed Baby Cal Wind. lol but thats mostly how they look at their pedifree list (basically a horses fmaily tree) then work their way from there :)

  3. I dont know either lol.

    good question.

maybe a family friend had a really fun imagination.

or someone's uncle got drunk at a christmas party.

  4. Most Race Horse names come from parts of the names of the Sire ( Father ) and Dam ( Mother ). For example, let's say the sire of a filly (girl horse ), is named Speedy Crown. And let's say the Dam's name is Queen Julie. Normally , names like Speedy Julie, or Queen's Crown might be used. Other names containing the name of the farm where the stallion stands could also be used.  Using the same above example, you could use Queen Hanover or Armbro Julie or Julie Blue Chip might be used. Strange or unusual names come from small breeders or small stable owners who just want to have a fun or cute name for their horse.

  5. from a witch doctor who lives in manila.

  6. Trot n Colt is pretty cluey. One thing he/she didn't mention (I didn't check their profile to see their s*x) is that a name cannot be reused for a certain amount of years. Imagine the names of children if you couldn't use a name that someone else had!
