Where do viruses go on a computer?

I think my computer has a virus or spyware on it, where do these things go in a computer? I called Dell and they are going to take my computer to fix it, but they asked that I take out the harddrive and battery before I send it.. if the virus is in the harddrive and I don't send it, then how will this help? Or is the virus somewhere else?

The Virus is on the hard rive. Are you sure they asked you to take the hard drive out of it ? It sounds as if you have a laptop and they would definitely not ask you to remove hard drive.

IF they are taking the computer without the hard drive then the issue is probably not a virus. There are some very rare viruses that can get into the BIOS but that is not the current trend.
