  1. You can exchange foreign coins at the money exchange outlets or at banks. You will find money exchanges at airports and in some parts  ( usually CBD areas) of major cities.

  2. You may not be able to cash them in.  Most banks will not take foreign coins.

  3. Banks tend to refuse to accept coins.  Frankly, the value, compared to the weight, isn't worth their while to deal with (cost them more to ship the coins than the coins are worth).  Commonly at international airports, there will be something that a charitable organization has put up where you can give them your coins.  It is worth their while - they can usually get an airline to let them send the coins, for free, to their counterparts abroad, and enough coins add up to some real money.  Ask an international charity, like the Red Cross, and see if they want them.

A lot of people give them to their kids (who essentially use them as play money).

  4. It's my understanding that the banks won't accept foreign coins.

  5. you may benefit the most by throwing them into a wishing well

  6. Your old 1000 Pesos coin is worth just 1 current Peso, or about 10 cents.  That's because all 1000 Pesos coins were issued from 1988 to 1992 - importantly, prior to January 1, 1993, the date when Mexico devalued its old Pesos - whether coins or banknotes - by a factor of 1,000 to one:

Also, as noted in other answers here, most currency exchange firms and banks will only exchange foreign banknotes - not coins - for US money.  More details:
