Question:

Where do you connect a Monster Fiber Optic Digital Wire to for 5.1 Sound System?

Hey. Just got a brand new Logitech Z-5500 sound system for my PC. I also purchased a Monster Fiber Optic Digital wire for it too, for best sound quality. There is a device that I have on my desk, to control the volume and all the settings, which has a wire connecting to the sub. I plug the wires into that device, and then into my PC to play the music. Now... The wire I have, connects into the back of the device, and on the back of my computer, it has a "Digital Audio Out" ... But the fiber optic wire does not fit (I'm almost positive). So, I have regular audio connections in, but I have this $25 dollar wire, and I can't figure out where it goes. Do most computers have an input for fiber optic digital?

Thanks.

  1. You need a sound card with a fiber optic output.  If the sound system works with the analog connectors, it's up to you if you want to spend more money on it.

  2. Your "digital audio out" on the back of the computer is referring to a "digital coaxial" audio connection, its the size connection as a phono jack, and usually comes in the color of orange. You have a fiber optic, and those two connections are not compatible. Return the fiber optic cable and look for a "digital audio coax" cable, monster colors them orange. Run the digital coax out from your computer into the audio receiver of your Logitech system.

    Hope this has helped!

  3. Mike is absolutely correct you need a coaxial connector. However, I can save you $30 on it. Any coaxial cable will work. If you go to Newegg.com you can get one for $5.00. $34 is way too much to spend on a piece of wire, and with digital transmission it either works or it doesn't. If the cable quality is too low it will not work, but unlike analog, an expensive cable will not make it sound any better than a cheap cable. Save your cash. I have not spent more than $10 on any cable in my system and the system works perfectly.

If you were running a long cable I'd suggest you get a slightly better one, but as long as your run is 6' or less get a cheaper cable, it will work just fine. BTW it doesn't cost Monster any more than anyone else to manufacture a cable so why are Monster cables so much more expensive?
