Where do you cut a rats nails

ok, i think my rats nails need clipping, but im not sure how to do it, and where im supposed to clip them. his claws look like a small hook, they arent like super long but i think they are getting to the stage where they need to be clipped. i have baby clippers but i dont if i should get a vet to do it, or if they is something he can run on to wear them down

cut them just above the pink bit as if you cut the pink they will bleed and you will not be able to cut them again as they will not trust you get small animal clippers from any pet shop or off ebay but if your not shore take it to the vets

do not cut them, rat nails are naturally sharp,and are still maintained by themselves. give the rat something to wear down his nails with like sand paper, rocks, or cement. and maybe you can take him out to play on the sidewalk

I took my rats to the vet but that was mostly because I needed someone to help me hold them.  It's ok for you to cut them.  Just be careful and don't cut the quick.

You cut them just above the quick.  The quick is the pink that is right below the actual nail.  If you cut them beyond the quick it does hurt, and it invites infection.  I advise you to take them to an exotics vet.  Let them show you how it's done.  I clipped my 2 rats nails the other day.  unless you are totally comfortable with it, and you know what you are doing, don't do it yourself until you are.

some tips for you.  in their free roaming time, let them play on a sidewalk. It will file them down some but it takes time.  You can also place a brick in their cage and it will do the same.  You can even FILE them yourself, be sure to hold the nail you are filing firmly as you can hurt them if the toe experiences too much movement in the process
