Are you talking just a normal household quantity?  If so, there's probably a few places locally that you can take what's called "household hazardous waste" if you don't like the idea of just throwing it away normally.

I'd try to ask someone with your city or other local government.  They should at least be able to give you some idea of who to contact if it's an outside industry or group or let you know what they do if it's a government-run program to pick things up.  I don't think most places charge since you're at least making the effort to bring your stuff to them, and there's sometimes outside funding to cover the program.
