Where do you find the code on tires that tell you when they were made?

I've heard that tires over 6 yrs. old can be dangerous to drive on & tire stores have been selling tires that have been in storage longer than 6 yrs. A newscast stated that there is a code on the tire that tells you the year it was made. I need tires now but don't want to buy any without being able to tell the year they were made.

  1. The production code on all tires are not equal but you will see a special code in an ellipse shape on at least 80% of all tires on the market, and that will help you find tire date of manufacture.

The "last 4 digits" on the ellipse tells us tire manufacture date. The first 2 digits is "PRODUCTION WEEK" and the last 2 digits is the "YEAR". Assuming there are 4 weeks in a month, we can say that this tire was manufactured by the end of March 2003 (12=12th week of the year, 03=Year 2003).

5000 means 50th week of year 2000, which means December 2000.

  2. yep i just sen it on the news also there is a dot number on one side or the other the last four number is the weeks and the yr..... thinking there is 52 weeks in a year first number then the last like o8.... which you will not find unless you have just got a new car which still might be a few yrs old when you get it... sorry but im a tire guy by trade and most ive seen is 02.... with any tire sence you can look and see if the tire is old and dry .... it will have cracks or it will just look dry... not a good sign either way....anyways the number will be on the back side of the tire is stamp in  about a inch or so long look for like     dot mvlk tho 1202     will be kind of like that... im sure theres going to be a big up roar over this for sure....new cars dont have new tires sometimes you know it going to be hard to find any tire with a  10 08 number id bet my pay check on it....the tires they was showing on tv was old used tires also.... i dont care what they said they didnt show any sticker tires.... but anyways you can try and look all tires have them.... the ones on my car are 12 02 made the 12th week of 02
