  1. Major thoroughbred races for 2-year-olds include the Champagne Stakes, Remsen Stakes, Hopeful Stakes and Breeder's Cup Juvenile to name a few.  Those races aren't until this fall.

  2. drf.com

  3. There is a horse named Mr.Mistoffelees. He is very talented.

  4. Its way to early to even think about it ..

their are some 50.00 thousand horses that get nominated for the derby then some break down some never race

And their might be a star that will be supplemented in the derby

and two yr olds will be racing now!

Just way to early ,, wait till next yr in spring

  5. Most of the 2 year old have not had their first race. I would go to http://www.breederscup.com.  Check under Juvenile and Juvenile filly division.  There might be a contender in the Juvenile turf.  The site is up but last time I checked they had not updated anything.  The first trials to the breeders cup will start sometime after July. This will be the best place to keep a eye on next year's Derby contenders.

  6. As said above, most of the best babies haven't started racing yet. Many two year olds will not race until late August or the fall of their two year old season or even later. Some will make the Breeders Cup World Championships the end of October and some won't be mature enough for it yet. The two BC Juvenile races, one for fillies, one for colts, are the biggest races on dirt, and they now have turf counterparts too. Some precicious 2 year olds will be taken off turf after the first of the year and tried on dirt. (The stakes I have listed below are run on dirt or artificial surfaces, depending on the track.)

Meanwhile, 2 YO stake racing does continue through November and early December. Come January 1, 2009, these babies are officially three year olds.

You can see some of the elite colts and fillies race for the first time at the prestigious Saratoga meet, in Saratoga Springs NY. Affectionately known as The Spa, many of the top trainers and owners in the country will be there for stakes competition for older horses. This is where Big Brown made his debut last year, in a race for maidens on the turf. Most 2 year olds make their first starts in 2YO maiden races.

There are "stakes" races for 2 year olds, both colts and fillies, where the best  are prenominated, the prize money is high and the horses can earn points for the Breeders Cup Juvenile and the 2009 KY Derby.  There will also be 2 YO stakes for "state-breds", restricted to horses bred and/or foaled in a specific state. Although not the usual path to the Run For The Roses, both Funny Cide and Smarty Jones ran in these prior to their big Derby preps.

Most of the  late summmer and fall meets at major racetracks have both maiden and 2 year old stakes racing:  Saratoga, Monmouth, Delaware, Keeneland, Churchill, Belmont, Hollywood Park, Monmouth, Del Mar, Arlington, Fair Grounds, Aqueduct, Santa Anita and others.

Some better known 2 year old stakes would include: Best Pal, Hopeful, Champagne, Del Mar Futurity, Norfolk Breeders Cup, Arlington-Washington Breeders Cup, Nashua, Remsen, Iroquoise and Kentucly Jockey Club.

For the fillies (don't exclude them): Demoiselle, Del Mar Debutante, The Lassie, Matron, Spinaway, Oak Tree Breeders Cup, Adirondack, Pocahontas, Golden Rod.

After the first of the year, keep your ear to the ground as some talented late bloomers may try 3 year old allowance races at the winter meets. Curlin and Big Brown are examples of horses that had minor setbacks in their two year old years and flew under the radar until they seemingly burst onto the scene.

Winter racing goes on at Aqueduct, Gulfstream, Tampa Bay, Fairgrounds, Santa Anita, Golden Gate Fields and Oaklawn. By late February and early March you are into the 3 year old Derby Stakes prep races and promising young stars will begin to show what they're made of on the Derby Trail. They'll be trying to earn enough graded stakes earnings to get into the 20 starters at the 2009 KD.

Just think, the 2009 Derby winner is out there getting ready to run his first race even as I type!
