Where do you get the power in your punches from?

I heard that in order to get stronger punches, you need to have a stronger chest. I have been working out my pecs lately and I've been wondering which muscles provide more power. Is this true?

  1. your shoulders and your hips. take a karate class and you will see how to do a correct punch with full power.

  2. I have always been taught that the power in your punches comes from your abdominales.

  3. It's nothing about muscles,

It's from your inner energy... you need to learn to transfer it correctly and focus it.

  4. technique first.

secondly, chest is the least, i think

power comes from your legs and hips, imo

  5. Pushups and some shoulder/back work certainly won't hurt your punch unless you get TOO massive and it slows you down.

But like everyone says, the power's coming from the legs/hips. Watch how boxers pivot their feet when they throw a punch. On a hook, they're pivoting on their lead leg to put their body into it. On a cross, the power's coming from the back and you see it as they pivot on the rear leg.

Do squats, lunges, toe raises, etc. Try to develop explosive energy with your muscles (google plyometrics). And, most importantly, learn technique.

  6. the power in the stronger punches comes from the legs and hips, the most important muscles being the glutes, hamstrings, quads, erector spinae, and obliques. a stronger chest will help somewhat, but that isn't were the power comes from in the power punches.

  7. mostly my hip and my legs along with the muscles in my arm.
