  1. We can access any news site on the Internet, be it CNN, BBC, FOX or a Russian news site. We can also subscribe to these channels on TV. Where do you get yours ?

18% of Russians who do have access to the Internet barely speak english, are you kidding me?! Get your facts right

  2. Russia do not have KGB anymore!

You can get the news in English here.

  3. While it is true that a Russian can access all sorts of news sites throughout the world on the Internet; it's worth noting that 18% of Russians have access to the internet as compared to 70% in most western countries, and of those 18%, the majority do not understand English to the level needed to read a news story in English, of which the majority of large news sources are printed in.

The fact remains that the vast majority of Russian get their news from the 1st channel, or any one of the other available channels, which are controlled directly by the Russian Govt, or indirectly through Kremlin friendly folks. Most people do not have satellite TV, and if they do, the lack of English knowledge would prevent them from subscribing to the sources that the previous answerer listed.

You ask me to get my facts straight without giving any of your own; OK, in whole, 3% of Russians speak English well and 18% speak some, but poorly. In Saint Petersburg and Moscow 16% speak English well, 30% poorly, and the rest not at all. None of these figures reflect that the 18% of Russians with internet access speak and understand English, at best, as a country, 3%, if all 3% have internet access, are able to read and comprehend news stories in English. Think and research before you tell someone else that they don't know what they are talking about.

  4. Technically "witchy girl" is correct There is no KGB anymore, but practically there is FSB and Putin is ex-KGB commie.

As for the freedom of speech, Putin pushed if I am not mistaken 5 or 7 different laws allowing to jail journalists, close media and in short control the information.

So, while KGB is gone, KGB style is slowly restored.

Russian lies about 2000 dead civilians in S.O. which were never substantiated by any proof, while HRW reported 44 casualties including military and civilians, that isn't brainwashing?

To Kam - Russia is not brainwashing? You're kidding right? Chauvinism and nationalism in Russia today are at the highest levels ever. Official media openly blames western capitalism for pretty much everything, just like the old communist days. Of course they quickly forgot how they were begging the same west for help and credits in 90s and how the same west helped.

Pretty much all independent TV companies were shutdown. Numerous newspapers shutdown. Whoever is left, gets terrorized by official censorship, pretty much any newspaper or other media can get into serious trouble for one or two sentences and as human rights activists say very often those are simply taken out of context just to have an excuse for crackdown.

So, you have total government control over mass media and you believe Russia isn't brainwashed?

  5. At least Russian news are not as brainwashing as US and Europes, where they openly lie to your face.
