  1. simplest way is to become an insurance advisor with the insurance companies and start working yourself.. these companies will support you further.

  2. Usually you just have to sit for a 40 hour class and take and pass the exam. It is really that simple. I own an agency if you would be interesting in speaking more.

  3. There really is no short cut.  You can find all the information and steps under your state department of insurance website.  Look under the link called licensing.  I would also suggest you shadow someone working in insurance to see if this is the career you want.  The agent who handles your auto insurance would be a good place to start.

But generally, you apply for a license, go through a federal investigation/background check from the fingerprints you provide, go to classes, take exams and if all goes well you are licensed by your state.  Then you get a job in insurance and the insurance companies appoint you to be an agent or representative of their company.  This requires another background check, credit check, etc.

While it is possible to get a job in an insurance agency/company without a license I would check before committing to the position that they are indeed going to pay for licensing. I would also see how much time you have to obtain the license.  There are also several licenses that you need depending on the product you are selling or servicing. So you may need a Property & Casualty License to sell home, auto insurance, a Life & Health license to sell life & health insurance, another license for Annuities, another license for investment products etc. Remember even if you are not directly selling the product you may need a license to be a customer service representative, claims adjuster etc.

In Ohio, where I live you must be licensed to take a payment from a customer, answer the most simple question or give any advice.  So, basically in my agency, even the receptionist had her insurance license.  We did not hire any unlicensed staff.  We had in the past and found that too many times, we paid for the process and they kept failing the tests and never were able to be licensed.  There was nothing they could do that was value except the most basic telemarketing calls.

  5. It's actually not a school.  You go to your state insurance department website.  You have to basically pass an insurance test.  You can buy study materials there, too.
