  1. I go to the window to record observations for the local NWS branch (and collect hail samples). :P Unless there is a TVS present and closing in on my location, then I actually take shelter until it's passed. Of course, I'm probably crazy, listen to everybody else. :)

  2. Is there a way you can get to the basement of the building or at least a lower floor that is not near windows?  That would be a good place.  Otherwise, stay put but move to an interior hallway and cover yourself with a heavy blanket.  It's flying debris that usually hurts people.

  3. This is the time right now to plan what to do for a tornado and make sure you have a NOAA weather alert radio The radios can alert you when a tornado warning is issued at night while sleeping.

A tornado watch means that conditions are favorable for tornadoes to develop and you should pay close attention to the weather. A watch it typically issued with in 2-3 hours of the event.

When a tornado warning is issued that means doppler radar has detected rotation in a storm or trained spotters have spotted a rotating wall cloud, funnel cloud, or a tornado on the ground.

If a tornado warning is issued for your area, do not panic. Go to a place of safety. Go to the lowest floor of your house like the basement. Once in the basement get under a sturdy piece of furniture or go into a bathroom in the basement. *****If no basement is available go in to an interior room such as a closet. If that is not available go in to an bathroom without windows. Stay away from outside walls and windows. Cover your head to protect from flying debris.***** Never try to out run a tornado in a car, if cought in a car and can not take no place of safety, lay down in a ditch and cover your head. Do not take cover under a over pass. Do not stay in mobile homes as they do not offer protection and can be flown as easily as cars can.

  4. your best bet in a bad storm would be a basement away from windows if you can not get to a basement  in a bathroom peferabaly in the bathtub covered over with a blanket because bathrooms usually have fewer windows than other room in the house

  5. Well, Never try to get away from the tornado in you car. This can be more dangerous than actually staying in you apartment.

An apartment on a high floor is not the best place to be in a tornado. I would reccomend to get into a bathroom or closet in the interoir of the apratment away from windows. A matres will be helpfull to protect you from flying debris.

If you are outside find the lowest lying area near you or a ditch. Crouch as low as you can a cover your head to protect it. The reason to get into a ditch is so the debris can fly over your head and not into it.

    Hope this helps.

P.S. IF you are getting the Tornadoes in NC or GA/SC they tend not to be any stronger than an EF2 so I would not be to worried.

Still make sure you get shelter.
