Much of it depends on your location.  You can try garden stores or pharmacies.  It is also called saltpeter in pharmacies.  The laws and restrictions in your area will determine if you can get it, how much, and if you can use it.  Remember, even if you get it, experimenting with it in your garage may also be against the law.  You should check because with new laws you can go to jail. "Simply for an experiment" may not be a legal activity.
