Seriously, any caver can tell you that you have to go really deep before there is a total absence of light... something over 100 feet, if I remember correctly.  I've been down a mile in a mine and IT WAS DARK.

There are plenty of caverns, whre you can take a tour and at soem point, they'll turn off all the lights and let you experience total darkness a little while. It's freaky indeed.
