Question:

Where do you go to register a domain name for your own website? ?

Is it yours for life or do you have to pay an annual fee to keep it? When you have this domain for your website do you need a separate computer to act as the server or can your own personal computer act as the server?

Just curious as it seems anyone and everyone can have their own domain name these days... just wondered how easy it was.

  1. You usually pay an annual fee to companies such as http://www.uk2.net/domains/

You can use your own computer, but that would not be the wisest option. You can easily find cheap web hosting sites which provide you with a server, an you choose which domain you want for that site on the server options from one that you have bought.

  2. As you may know a domain name is just a name, not a real website. If you are going to create your website: 1- Buy a domain name. 2- Buy a web hosting service to provide your online space and enable you to get your website online at your purchased domain name.

If you want to start your website I recommend purchase your domain and hosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some hosting services offer this gift today.

One of these services is reachable at: http://bluehost-service.atspace.com . Their service is really great and easy to use. This company offers "Free Site Builder" that helps you build your web pages without difficulty if you are not skilled in using any website creating program. (WYSIWYG: What You See Is What You Get).

  3. You can register your domain name at godaddy.com.  Your annual registration fee will be USD $10.  You will have to pay this every year to keep the name. You can then forward your the name to a web address where you may have a personal website.  E.g. if you like, you can register to have your pictures stored at smugmug.com $40 per year.  Also, if you use coupon code caFkm6OVOzdTg and save $5 for the first year.

    Good luck!

  4. To own your own domain, you just need to purchase / register it from a DOMAIN NAME REGISTRAR like godaddy.com or namesecure.com   They will provide a blank parking page by default.  Domain Name Registration is an annual yearly fee.

To own and run a complete website, you need a WEBSERVER.  WebServers cost an annual monthly or yearly fee.  Or you can learn how to install and run webservers from your own location and negotiate with your internet services provider to use their services to run your own webserver.

Your DOMAIN NAME REGISTRAR will then point your domain name to your webserver - whereever that may be (your home - your business - a webhosting company in timbuktu).

Many website services exist that provide absolutely everything that is needed to own and run your own website (domain name, webserver, hosting, programming, marketing, design, maintenance, software installation - upgrades - support, etc)

For a beginner, I highly suggest working with an experienced web developer or even jumping in with yahoo webhosting, because they provide absolutely everything you need with free services and annual pricing.

    Free:   http://www.geocities.com

    Commercial:   http://webhosting.yahoo.com

    Commercial:   http://www.dreamhost.com

    Commercial:   http://www.monicalamb.com/blog1

  5. Register a domain (usually $10/yr): www.godaddy.com

Then you need to get webhosting, as the domain is useless without it. I suggest 1and1.com

  6. search for domain name registration in google.  if you want a .com website, then you can use any international company as most admin is done online. if you want a local domain then you can fine a local registrant.

  7. You need to pay an annual fee, and many webhosts come with a domain name.  Some even give you the domain name for life.

And if your computer acts as the server you can indeed use your PC, but you need to keep it on 24/7.  That puts extreme wear and tear on the innards of the machine.
