  1. I'm not a 100% sure, but If you don't have any duel citizenship, then I think you need a visa regardless to where you're going. I know some countries under the commonwealth may not require a visa, but to most countries in the world I think its a must.

your best bet is to contact your local embassy of what ever country you have in mind.

  2. You need the passport to identify yourself as a U.S. citizen both for entering/leaving US, and while in other countries.

A visa is issued by your destination country.  The question of whether you need a visa to travel to another country from the US is decided by each country, and can change over time.

For example, in general, you don't need a visa to go to most European countries if you are a U.S. citizen, but, 15 years ago, France was having a lot of trouble with Algerian separatists bombing targets in France, so, for a couple of years, *everyone* had to get a VISA.

The best answer will come from the Embassy or Consulate here in the U.S. of the country(ies) you are planning to visit.   If you are visiting several countries, you would have to apply to each country individually for a visa.

Based on my experience visiting France during their clamp-down period, I would say that the lead time for getting a visa is approx the same as for getting a passport: And, you must already have a valid passport before you apply for a visa.  You will have to send/supply your passport to the Embassy, and you will receive it back with the visa that they issue you.

    Getting passport: approx 2-3 months.

Getting visa:an additional approx 2-3 months: AFTER you have the passport.

Of course, these times can be expedited by paying additional fees, and/or hand-carrying your application and standing in line at the Consulate for the visa.

And, since this is America, of course you can hire someone to stand in line for you: there are companies who will expedite passport applications and visa applications by hand-carrying them thru the process for you, for a fee, of course.

    Hope this helps...

  3. passport or visa every country

  4. You need a passport to exit and reenter the US, and to enter foreign countries.

Visas, generally, are necessary only for extended stays, but you should check with the State Department to be sure.
