  1. You don't have to buy a digital TV unless you want to.

If you receive your TV via cable or satellite, you can continue using your old set as you do now.  The cable box or satellite receiver will continue to put out the proper signal.

If you receive your TV over the air with an antenna, you can simply get a converter box and use the same set.  Granted, the picture won't look any better than it does now, but you can still view the broadcasts.  Visit http://www.dtv2009.gov and apply for up to two $40 discount coupons for the converter boxes.

You can also visit http://www.antennaweb.org and put in your ZIP code to see what digital stations are in your area.

Now if you REALLY want to get rid of your old set, many retailers are accepting the old sets for recycling.  You can also call your local refuse collectors and ask about "electronic waste recycling".  Many cities are offering this because they do not want the electronic waste in their landfills.

I hope this helps.  Please return and select a Best Answer from all of those submitted.

  2. No that's not right.

You don't have to buy HDTV's, you just have to have a digital compatible TV. Most old TV's, or TV's that run on cable, will have to have a digital converter because analog signals will no longer be broadcasted.

You can search for DTV on Yahoo! and see if you can get a converter box coupon from the government.

If you need a place to put your old TV's because you recently bought new HDTV's, you should recycle them at a electronics recycling plant.

  3. Put 'em on the curb. Someone will pick 'em up.
