Hey, I am off to visit Guatemala in a few months, I planned to stay in Guatemala city upon my arrival for a few nights and then go to Antigua. But in my little research so far, it says that Guatemala city is very dangerous etc....begining to freak me out! So would I be better off just going straight to Antigua and ignore Guatemala City? Please bear in mind that I will be a lone female! Cheers

  1. O WOW UR A GIRL AND UR GONNA GO BY YOURSELF!?!?! I REALLY DONT RECOMMEND THAT!! THE CRIME LEVEL THERE IS VERY HIGH! I JUST WENT LIKE A MONTH AGO AND ITS VERY BAD! IF I WERE YOU I WOULD EITHER GO WITH A GUY THAT CAN PROTECT ME OR NOT GO AT ALL. BUT IF YOU REALLY WANNA GO, NO PART OF  GUATEMALA IS SAFE BUT SOME PARTS ARE BETTER THAN OTHERS ANTIGUA IS BETTER THAN THE CAPITAL. TAKE A GUN IF YOU CAN! I REALLY SUGGEST THAT IF YOU GO OUT PUT YOUR MONEY IN A PLACE WHERE THEY CAN GET IT QUICK (EX: BRA) DONT WEAR JEWELRY CUS THEY WONT ASK YOU FOR IT THEY WILL JUST RIP IT OFF!!! UMM IM  NOT TRYING TO SCARE YOU OR,  SAY ANYTHING BAD OF GUATEMALA ITS MY COUNTRY I LOVE IT AND ITS VERY BEAUTIFUL! YOU WILL ENJOY IT VERY MUCH JUST BE VERY CAREFUL! IF YOU HAVE ANYMORE QUESTIONS EMAIL ME!

  2. Skip the city it's dangerous and dirty.   If you must stay visit Museum Popul Vuh or Museum Ixchel.   Antigua is way cleaner and safer, and also could serve as a base city for travel to other parts of Guatemala.   Check out Chichicastenango on a Thursday morning with their market or go to Lake Atitalan, it's beautiful.

Good there are many mas sew for discovering in guatemala but those that it(he,she) leaves him(her) are the important mas, in advance welcomly to guatemala.

SECURITY RECOMMENDATION: use yellow, green taxis or of hotel taxis, don´t use a white taxies, as any included country exists the dangeruos and guatemala is not the exepcion but the dangerous places are sooooooo far from the tourist zones of the country.

  4. Guatemala is a very beautiful country. I went there for 2 days about 2 years ago and it is a very beautiful city. In places like Trebol the crime rate is very high and I suggest that you travel in Taxis but always a licensed one. I recommend to stay in an area by the Obelisco of Guatemala City as I know of a great place to stay called the Xamanek Student Inn and believe me it is a very good place to be at especially if you go by yourself. It is a very big place kind of and it has like 7 rooms and showers and bathrooms and the place is CLEAN!! Since you are going by yourself I recommend you go there as it is very safe and close to a shopping center as well as accessible transportation (Taxis and buses can be found maybe two blocks down) and has excellent dining nearby. The rooms are kind of like regular rooms with like 2 or 3 bunk beds and it is very clean. You will share a room but i am sure you wont mind as there is plenty of space and it only costs $18 (at least when I went) a night. Besides there is various Americans and Europeans there so you will be safe.Try to go to Antigua in a private bus as they are safer and generally arrive faster. Good luck, be safe and have a nice trip.

P.S. Here is the link for it http://www.mayaworld.net/xamanek/

  5. Antigua make sure you do not speak english or else people are going to know and steal form you

  6. It's true that parts of Guatemala City can be dangerous especially after dark but other sections are certainly worth a visit. There is a very active club scene after dark in the city.It depends on what your interests are.To me,it is not all that interesting in the city since so many of the historic buildings have been damaged or destroyed by the many earthquakes over the years.I like the smaller more indigenous towns and cities.

You will find many more English speaking tourists in and around places such as Antigua,Panajachel,Quetzaltenango

    and the ruins of Tikal.

Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions or concerns.I've lived in Xela,Livingston and Lake Izabal in the past.

    Buena Suerte y Buen Viaje
