Where do you recommend in Majorca?

My husband and I (early 40s) are hoping to go to Majorca for a week at the beginning of September but have never been here before and would like advice on where to go.

We are leaving our teenagers at home so do not need family friendly.

We would like nice beach, nice hotel/apartment, the more upmarket end of the scale. Not too quiet but no union jack boxer shorts please.

I have just returned from Alcudia and it was fantastic!!! The hotel we stayed in was the condessa de la bahia and it was right on the beach!!! it really is lovely and being an all inclusive hotel, it is great value for money!!!

Forget all of the above. They are OK if you are looking for a kids club or an all inclusive deal.

My recomendation would be somewhere between Palma and Palma Nova, ie to the west of the capital Palma. Go to the East coast of Palma and this is predominately German

Illetas would be perfect. It has about half a dozen hotels all 4 or 5 star. Its about 10 mins by taxi to Palma so perfect for some shopping and to explore the gorgeous multi cultural city. Also its close to places like Puerto Portals (5 mins) for some glamour and top, top dining. The beaches are small but numerous and very beautiful.

Alternatively head into the mountains on the west coast to Deya or Soller. The scenery is amazing. This is where all the stars with holiday homes in Mallorca are based.

puerto pollensa, definately , i,ve been twice and my parents go at least twice a year it has stunning beaches and mountain views plus a harbour ,there are a fair amount of shops, it is very pretty, and ideal you can also catch the bus into alcudia or the other way to formentor which i hear is very pretty too, hope you take my advice have a nice time, not loads of pensioners there, and who cares if there are (jackie m),

I think it depends on what exactly you are looking for while you are out there. Local culture or mass tourism.

For mass tourism then Magaluf (mega-rough) for the all night partying or Alcudia for the miles of tacky souvineers and generic open air restaurants.

For a more traditional feel, then Palma it's self is good or I'm told Inca. Though Inca is inland so no real beach to choose from.

Cala d'Or on the southern end of the island has a good reputation (though I've not personally been so I can't comment). Otherwise Puerto Pollensa in the north has stunning views a nice beach and has a very riviera type feel to it. It can be a little on the older generation side but if you venture back from the main strip by a road or two there are some great bars.

Over the headland from Pollensa is a small fishing village called Cala san Vicente. This place is probably too quiet for you to stay in but if you go to the north east of the island is well worth a visit. The wealthier Majorcians have holiday villas here so the few restaurants and bars there are are quite different from the general run of the mill tourist offering.

We are a bit older than you and have been to several parts of Majorca and I think Santa Ponsa is the best closely followed by Alcudia, avoid Palma, Magaluf, as its full of teenagers. Puerto Pollensa was nice but lots of pensioners there and not much entertainment. If going to Alcudia the Bellevue Complex is very popular but you will find mainly families with young kids there, Cuidad Blanca is fantastic apartments on the beach but are expensive.

Calla Bona is nice, right on the harbour but don't thimk the beach is brilliant.  Can't really remember as I went with a friend who is not really into the beach.  Lots of tavernas round the harbourgh, and the resort is a nice stroll into Cala Millor as they all run on.

my husband and i (late 20's) went on a last minute deal - and stayed in magaluf - every day we visted other parts of the island, and it was nice. we tried on two evenings to have a nice meal in magaluf - the bouncers etc thought we were strange because we wanted a real resturant, not burger and chips

other towns have a lot of markets (like alcudia) and nice historic areas etc. just hire a car and go wherever you feel for the day!
