Shopping day

By C.S. Scotkin

A young woman

at my grocery store

bags your goodies,

helps old ladies

to their cars.

Helped me bag

my purchased stuff,

said “can I help you take

these to your car?”

Such longing in her eyes,

I could not refuse her.

A soft rain shower

was ending peacefully.

She pointed to the western sky.

“ See it! That’s a rainbow!

the beautifullest rainbow ever!”

She clapped with unselfconscious joy.

“Birdies take a bath in puddles,

The rain drops twinkle on the cars,

I love the rain!”

For one brief moment

I saw the world

through her Down’s Syndrome eyes.

I thanked her, she said, “come again.”

I will…

  1. Very sweet in deed. Most of your poems have warm hearted themes; I envy that. I find it difficult to expose my heart to things other than nature.

    Oh yeah, the question--Home Depot.

  2. I like where you are going with this but I do not think you need to spell out Down Syndrome eyes.  Maybe emphasize the joy  and glee more making it obvious that a child/adult and then end with something like:

    "I saw the world

    through her eyes...

    her special eyes

The word "beautifullest" is helping to set this up already for you.  Just a thought.

  3. How sweet!

  4. So true that people with Down Syndrome show us what God's unconditional love is like.

    Just a short tidbit:

In the current English language that we use in the United States we would say Down Syndrome because Dr. Down didn’t have the syndrome therefore we do not use the possessive “Down’s”.  However “Down’s” is used in British English. So either way we say it is correct.

  5. At a small, local grocery in our small southwestern town. Manage to greet at least four of the clerks by name...they are used to dealing with the nutty lady in jeans and sneakers. I feel welcome.

It's the small things we do, sometimes without thinking, which endear folks to us.  Wonderful feelings.

(OK, light bulb...I am NOT going to be specific!  Do you hear me?

And I didn't leave the caps lock key on...and I'm going to find a swatter and smash you!)

  6. I used to teach swimming to Down's Syndrome children, so I often got to enjoy the radiant joy of life through their eyes.  I haven't thought of this in a while, but you brought those wonderful memories to mind.  For that, and for your lovely, warm poem ....thank you.
