Question:

Where does 5th grade grammar instruction fit in?

I am teaching both English and Lit to 5th graders this year. I want to use guided reading, lit stations, and writer's workshop.

Where does grammar fit into this? I know they can practice grammar in their writing and at lit stations, but when does the instruction/asessment happen?

I work in a traditional Catholic school, so I have to be careful not to be too "progressive." (Very frustrating!!!)

  1. idk

  2. Grammar fits into English.

  3. do your own homework!

  4. Catholic schools don't lack progression in their teaching styles, they are required to teach the curriculum the same as any other type of school. That is a generalisation. Out of interest and seeing as you're an English language teacher in the United States, how do you feel about the appalling lack of grammar and literacy skills amongst Americans?, I'm shocked and appalled by what I see on this site.

  5. Can you squeeze it in with one of your lit stations?  Or even have it in place of one of the lit stations?  It should be taught with English.

  6. You will have to fit the lessons in with your English lessons and with your writing lessons. Your assessment will have to be in their writing if you aren't going to give them actual tests on the grammar lesson you are teaching. You have to give them guided instruction before you send them off to their stations anyway, you don't plan on doing stations everyday do you??
